Abstract

Highlights: The Family Farm Movement was a major advocate of racial equality and solidarity, in the 1980s and before. Alt-right/hate groups have worked to obfuscate the true causes of rural decline and undermine effective actions to curtail it. Political elites have derailed bi-racial coalition voting and union organizing throughout the rural sector. Rural and urban actors, have collaborated to address rural and agricultural decline and to expose regressive federal policies. Class consciousness and class solidarity are critical to social justice for working-class whites and Blacks.
