- Abstract: Organic peroxides have a wide range of applications, used as hardeners, oxidizing agents, and initiator both in industrial and laboratory fields. However, the hazards are divided into fire, deflagration, and leakage the harmful toxic chemicals due to the risk of a runaway reaction in the processes and facility. In Taiwan, Central Taiwan Science Park has established a chemical database and independent reporting chemical information platform to handle the functions of mastering chemical information. However, the reactive hazard description provided in the safety data sheet is mainly recorded qualitatively and seasoned managers are required for safety and health management to distinguish the level of severity. This study used a thermal analysis apparatus, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), to measure the physical properties and thermal hazard parameters of organic peroxides during the entire gamut of process. In addition, the reactive hazard evaluation procedure and semi-quantitative rankings of reactivity chemical were conducted and judged by NFPA 704. Based on the results, we considered operating modes of optimal design and determined the hazard rankings technology and applications of reactive chemicals to find the optimal process safety management, along with the eradication of the source of the hazard effects. Highlights: Thermal decomposition behaviors of three organic peroxides had been distinguished. Calorimetry and NFPA 704 rating system were applicableAbstract: Organic peroxides have a wide range of applications, used as hardeners, oxidizing agents, and initiator both in industrial and laboratory fields. IPD of DTBP, CHP, and DCPO was applied to establish the hazard rankings technology of chemical of interest. … (more)
