- Abstract: Nanostructured tungsten (W) based alloy with the nominal composition of W98.5 Zr0.5 (La2 O3 )1.0 (in wt. %) was synthesized by the mechanical alloying of W base powders, Zirconium (Zr) and lanthanum oxide (La2 O3 ) using planetary ball mill for 20 h. The 20 h mechanically milled powders had been compacted with 625 MPa pressure and pressureless sintering at 1400 °C for 2 h in an argon atmosphere. The milled powders and the consolidated sample were characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), particle size analyzer and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The minimum powder size was observed to be 425.68 nm from 682.39 nm after 20 h of mechanical milling. The enhanced hardness, wear-resistance and compressive strength were evident due to grain refinement and dispersion strengthening.
