- Abstract: Methacrylic monomer of 7-Methacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin (MAOMC) was synthesized by reacting 7-hydroxy-4-methyl coumarin with Methacryloyl chloride. Copolymers of 7-Methacryloxy-4-methylcoumarin with N-vinyl pyrrolidone (NVP) at different feed composition was prepared by free radical solution polymerization at 70 ± 1 °C using Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as an initiator and Ethylmethylketone (EMK) as a solvent. The synthesized monomer and copolymers were analysized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Proton and Carbon nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H & 13 C NMR) spectroscopy. The polydispersity indices of the copolymers determined using gel permeation chromatography, which suggest that the chain termination is predominantly by disproportion. Thermal analysis(TGA) of the copolymers was done in N2 atmosphere, the polymers are thermally stable upto 475 °C. The result shows, the polymer stability increases with the increase of MAOMC unit in the copolymer. Antibacterial activity of the polymers was also investigated against the pathogenic bacteria Bacillus subtilis, Klebshella planticola and Escherichia coli in a standard disk diffusion assay against microbes using Ampicillin as a standard. The antibacterial activity of the copolymer increases with MAOMC content increases in the copolymer; this indicates that coumarin constituent placed essential role in antimicrobial agent.
