- Graphical abstract: A diacylhydrazone-based fluorescent probe HMPD was developed for the detection of Al 3+ with a binding ratio of 1:2. HMPD could selectively detect Al 3+ with a low detection limit (0.76 μM) without the inhibition of Ga 3+ and In 3+ in the same periodic group. The practicality of HMPD was shown by the application in real water samples and test strips and HMPD -Al 3+ complex could be recycled several times through sequential EDTA application. The sensing mechanism of HMPD to Al 3+ was demonstrated with the spectroscopic studies and theoretical calculations. Abstract: A novel diacylhydrazone-based fluorescent sensor HMPD was developed for the sensing of Al 3+ . In the presence of Al 3+, HMPD showed a marked fluorescence increment with a 1:2 stoichiometry of HMPD to Al 3+ . Detection limit of HMPD to Al 3+ was found as 0.76 μM. HMPD could determine Al 3+ irrespective of the presence of Ga 3+ and In 3+ . HMPD was satisfactorily applied to the qualification of Al 3+ in real water samples and test strips. The sensing process of HMPD to Al 3+ was reversible by EDTA application. Binding process of HMPD to Al 3+ was proposed through fluorescence and UV–vis spectroscopy, Job plot, FT-IR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, 1 H NMR titration and theoretical calculations.
