- Graphical abstract: Hydrothermal reactions of N, N' -bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L ) and 1, 4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1, 4-NDC) with Cd(II) and Co(II) metal salts afforded two coordination polymers showing a 1D looped chain and a 3D framework with the (6 5 .8)-cds topology, respectively, indicating that the structural diversity is subject to the metal identity. Moreover, complex 1 displays an emission at 361 nm upon excitation at 328 nm and complex 2 encapsulates a maximum of 403.90 mg g −1 at 60 °C on iodine adsorption. Abstract: Hydrothermal reactions of N, N' -bis(3-pyridylmethyl)oxalamide (L ) and 1, 4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (1, 4-NDC) with Cd(II) and Co(II) metal salts afforded {[Cd(L )(1, 4-NDC)(H2 O)]‧5H2 O}n, 1, and {[Co2 (L )2 (1, 4-NDC)2 (H2 O)4 ]‧3MeOH‧H2 O}n, 2, which have been structurally characterized by using single crystal X-ray diffraction. Complex 1 forms a 1D looped chain with the (3 2 )(3)-2, 4C5 topology, while complex 2 shows a 3D framework with the (6 5 .8)-cds topology, indicating that the structural diversity is subject to the metal identity. Moreover, complex 1 displays an emission at 361 nm upon excitation at 328 nm and complex 2 encapsulates a maximum of 403.90 mg g −1 at 60 °C on iodine adsorption. Weak interactions arising from NH/OH groups in complex 2 and iodine may govern the adsorption.
