- Abstract:
- ABSTRACT: This commentary discusses the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic for cities in Africa, particularly the informal settlements that make up a large part of African cities. There is a strong possibility that COVID-19 will result in the relocation of residents from informal settlements to the urban periphery, but this could result in further social exclusion and should be avoided. The key lesson of the pandemic is that it is essential to upgrade informal settlements in order to reduce the risk of infectious disease and in order to reduce social inequities. Strengthening urban governance processes is a key precondition for this.
