Abstract

Abstract: Media professionals are increasingly confronted with misinformation and disinformation, which impedes their professional responsibility to communicate the truth. Institutions such as the International Criminal Court are critically dependent on public legitimacy and state support to achieve their function, and yet, may be vulnerable to harmful narratives which erode these vital pillars. Using the example of the Kenya situation, this comment describes how such narratives may be constructed and employed and identifies lessons for the ICC in working better with media professionals to ensure that these false information storms can be weathered.
