Abstract

Abstract : This essay places More's Sadness of Christ in the ancient genre of consolatio . Arising out of Socrates' use of philosophy as a means of consolation in the Phaedo, the genre was epitomized in Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy . In the genre, philosophy, with the help of poetry and rhetoric, provides moral remedies to suffering man with the hope of reordering his passions, intellect, and will to their true good. In other words, the genre of consolatio is philosophy's attempt to provide a solution to the moral problem of evil. Thomas More's Sadness of Christ is a Christian version of this ancient genre. While appropriating philosophical principles and images, More recasts those principles and images in the light of faith, and gives the Christian martyr's proper preparation for death and suffering by reordering his passions and intellect to their proper good through consolation in prayer and meditation on the sufferings of Christ. Abstract : Cette étude place la Tristesse du Christ de More dans le genre ancien de la consolatio . Partant de l'usage que fait Socrate de la philosophie comme moyen de consolation dans le Phédon, le genre a été incarné par Boèce dans la Consolation de la philosophie . Dans ce genre, la philosophie, avec l'aide de la poésie et de la rhétorique, fournit un remède moral à la souffrance de l'homme en lui redonnant l'espoir de réorganiser ses passions, son intellect et sa volonté pour en retrouver le bon usage. En d'autres termes, le genre de la consolatio est la tentative de trouver une solution au problème du mal grâce à la philosophie. La Tristesse du Christ de Thomas More est une version chrétienne de ce genre ancien. Tout en s'appropriant les principes et les images de la philosophie, More les refond à la lumière de la foi et fournit au martyr chrétien une bonne préparation à la mort et à la souffrance, afin qu'en restaurant le bon usage de ses passions et de son intellect, il puisse trouver la consolation dans la prière et la méditation sur la souffrance du Christ.
