- Abstract : Introduction: Research has consistently identified that older adults do not always get the care or support they need when it comes to sexual health and well-being. Indeed, structural and individual level ageism is a barrier within health and social care. In March 2022 we launched a Sexual Rights Charter for Older Adults to tackle this discrimination. Methods: Using findings from our programme of research at the University of Sheffield, we designed and developed the Charter in partnership with Age-friendly Sheffield as part of their age-friendly city initiative. Further development of the Charter came from extensive consultation with the public, health and social care professionals, civil servants, and aged-care specialists across Sheffield. Results: The resulting Charter is a set of statements, and Guidance Notes, that various service providers, professionals, and policy-makers can adopt to support the sexual rights of people as they age. It aims to help people get better at talking about sexuality so they can get the support they need and services are guided on how to provide that support. Discussion: By incorporating the Charter into our work, we can make a difference to the lives of people as they get older by recognising sexual agency, respecting diversity, and tackling ageism. We have designed the Charter so that everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, race, disability, and social class, will be treated with dignity and respect.
