Abstract

Abstract : Objectives: Value-based healthcare is defined as healthcare of quality that is focused on the patient and on the public. It is a paradigm in health services provision that promotes patient-centered care and the optimization of care processes, where measurement of results and patient experience are fundamental. It aims to achieve the best possible outcomes with the available resources contributing to social connectivity. Public participation is a mechanism to incorporate citizens in a transparent and orderly manner, in public decision-making, to empower them. For a decade now, our organization has been developing initiatives focused on improving the quality of care through projects that include professionals' participation and citizens' collaboration. In this sense, in 2021, aiming to gather experiences and learnings accumulated, a guide was generated to provide healthcare professionals and managers with new tools to facilitate public participation, providing recommendations that promote the implementation of projects within the framework of value-based healthcare. Method: The guide has been developed based on a review of the literature of three clinical situations where patients' participation becomes a key element to contribute on patient centered care and value-based healthcare: (i) de-implementation of low-value clinical practices, (ii) promotion of shared decision-making tools and (iii) promotion of patient participation for the improvement of health services and user experience. Afterwards, success stories of different initiatives in the territory were shared. In addition, co-creation workshops have been conducted with expert healthcare professionals to develop the guide based on design thinking methodology. Finally, the recommendations included in the guide have been validated and enriched prior to its publication. Results: The guide is an interactive document created with the participation of 21 healthcare professionals. For each project, the guide presents the possible application scenarios, the implementation stages and tools that can be adapted to each situation. Although each project has specific recommendations due to its particularities, the following common phases have been recognized: 1) to create a team and seek support from the organization, 2) to define and share the strategy, 3) to develop an implementation plan, 4) to implement the project, and 5) to evaluate and communicate. Resources and tools are provided to reflect upon the shortcomings, strengths and opportunities to improve clinical practice and to establish action plans both on the individual and team levels. To launch the guide, a webinar was held on December 2021 with 221 attendees. Conclusions: This guide responds to the need to change the paradigm in healthcare towards a more participatory model, which promotes value-based healthcare and encourages the implementation of projects that stimulate interaction between professionals and patients. Its design is very practical and adaptable to the different realities of care and, therefore, it can be considered as a tool that facilitates the implementation and sustainability of quality care.
