- Abstract: The effect of nitrate-reducing bacteria (NRB) on the hydrogen embrittlement of X80 steel in a near-neutral pH solution was studied by various tests. NRB promote the formation of numerous pits under static load after 120 days and enlarge the polarization current at the same polarization potential. The increasing probability of hydrogen penetration into the biotic medium further leads to hydrogen embrittlement higher than 7–17% of the sterile medium. Under the same failure risk of 40%, NRB can cause hydrogen deterioration of steel, and the safe cathodic potential range will be narrowed from − 0.79–− 1.08 V to − 0.79–− 0.86 V (saturated calomel electrode). Highlights: NRB promoted the formation of pits on X80 steel under constant stress. Increased SCC susceptibility is attributed to the rising of cathodic current by NRB. NRB can accelerate hydrogen permeation current and narrow cathodic protection range.
