Abstract: The commercially available Type-3/ Type-4 cylinders which are subjected to store hydrogen should have two important characteristics: required burst pressure and better weight performance. A variety of factors affect these characteristics out of which the geometry of the vessel plays a significant role in determining the strength of the liner and the winding pattern of the composite, influencing its properties. This study aims to analyze the effects of dome shape on burst pressure, failure characteristics, and weight performance of the vessel. A mathematical model is developed for estimating the thickness of the liner manufactured by spin forming. An FEA model for estimating the burst pressure and the failure characteristics of the vessel is developed. The model is validated experimentally using the results of the hydrostatic pressure burst test of ISO 15869. The winding pattern of the composite depends on the opening radii; the radii of the domes are normalized to obtain a universal winding pattern that could be wound on all these heads avoiding fiber slippage. A suitable dome profile to yield better vessel performance is suggested.
