- Abstract: The solar energy as renewable energy resources for desalination of water is novel, since it allows the daily use of renewable resources existed. Three phases are employed for desalination process. The first phase is preheating the pumped seawater, this is followed by steam generation phase by means of parabolic dish or trough collectors. The third phase is the condensation phase. An automatic sun tracking system is attached to parabolic dish or trough collector to increase the efficiency of solar energy collected during the day. Preliminary calculations suggest that the system could provide a temperature of 315 °C at least during the day with about 0.06 L/s of soft water, using parabolic dish of 4 m 2 surface area. Solar thermal energy had previously only be used in small-scale devices in rural regions for sea water desalination. The reason for this has mainly been explained by the relatively low productivity rate compared to the high capital cost. However, the coming shortage in fossil fuel supply and the growing need for fresh water in order to support increasing water and irrigation needs, have motivated further development of water desalination and purification by renewable energies.
