- Abstract: Lithium‐ion batteries (LIBs) power almost all consumer electronics products these days. High‐energy density and low cost are some of the reasons behind LIBs being used to electrify all modes of transportation. Battery equivalent circuit models enable estimation of the state of battery energy and power. These models also assist in the capturing dynamic and transient operation of electric vehicles (EVs). Researchers have used lumped equivalent circuit models in the past which fail to capture the transient variation of battery capacity during pulsed charging scenarios. In this article, we approach the estimation of battery equivalent circuit parameters from an electrochemical model‐based approach. This is the first research work to employ the single particle model that considers the electrolyte behavior to derive battery equivalent circuit parameters. We evaluate this approach using three different batteries of varying cell capacities. This technique not only improves the accuracy of these models but enables a complete understanding of the transient load operation of these batteries.
