Abstract

Abstract : This paper explores the leadership qualities of integrity and ability, and the impact of such qualities on team production, with a formal model. Integrity is captured by the degree to which the leader internalizes follower welfare. Ability describes the competence of the leader in productive and rent‐seeking activities. The leader and followers of a team each choose to spend time between production and rent‐seeking. While an increase in leader rent‐seeking ability may not induce the team to spend more time on productive activities, an increase in the integrity of the leader will.
