- Abstract : Alluvial fan sediments contain valuable information on environmental change and anthropogenic influences, and function as an archive of landscape development. The purpose of this paper is to describe the analysis of the sedimentary information from core samples taken from two alluvial fans in the Saskatchewan prairies. The analysis assessed grain size, organic matter content, and microfossil presence to identify periods of accumulation and stabilization. Parker, Beavers, and Product weathering indices were used to analyze the modern source soil samples and the borehole cores to determine weathering/leaching conditions. The bed‐load transport sediments showed a higher leaching intensity whereas lower leaching was revealed for periods of stability, silt sheet flows, and sand sheet flows. The Beavers Index was not only a strong indicator of a bed‐load transport layer, but also of calcium accumulation zones marking alluvial fan surface stability. The large Dolomite/Calcite ratio marking the calcium accumulation zones was used for correlation between the two alluvial fan sites on a regional scale. A comparison of the stratigraphy of the two alluvial fans documents that a relationship exists between agriculture and an increase in erosion . Le développement des cônes alluviaux pendant l'holocène dans la vallée Qu'appelle, en Saskatchewan: Les sédiments des cônes alluviaux contiennent des informations précieuses sur les changements environnementaux et les influences anthropiques. Ils fonctionnent ainsi comme des archives du développement du paysage. L ' objectif de cet article est de décrire le processus d ' analyse de l ' information sédimentaire provenant de carottes prélevées sur deux cônes alluviaux des prairies de la Saskatchewan. L ' analyse a évalué la taille des grains, la teneur en matière organique et la présence de microfossiles afin d ' identifier les périodes d ' accumulation et de stabilisation. Les indices d ' altération Parker, Beavers et Product ont été utilisés pour caractériser les échantillons de sol de source moderne de même que les carottes de forage dans l ' optique de déterminer les conditions d ' altération et de lessivage. Tout d ' abord, les sédiments de transport du lit ont montré une intensité de lixiviation plus élevée tandis qu ' une lixiviation plus faible a été relevée pour les périodes de stabilité, les écoulements en nappe de limon et les écoulements en nappe de sable. L ' indice Beavers s ' est révélé comme étant un indicateur fort d ' une couche de transport du lit, mais aussi des zones d ' accumulation de calcium marquant la stabilité de la surface du cône alluvial. Par la suite, le rapport dolomite/calcite élevé marquant les zones d ' accumulation de calcium a été employé pour établir la corrélation entre les deux sites. À cet égard, une comparaison de la stratigraphie des deux cônes alluviaux montre qu ' il existe une relation entre l ' agriculture et l ' augmentation de l ' érosion . … (more)
