Abstract

ABSTRACT: This career-spanning interview with Xeric award-winning comic creator Tom Scioli was undertaken in July 2020, the same month his latest work, Jack Kirby: The Epic Life of the King of Comics, was released from Ten Speed Press. Tom Scioli won a Xeric Award in 1999 for his creator-owned comic The Myth of 8-Opus and gained further prominence as co-creator (with Joe Casey) of the Eisner-award nominated Gødland (2005–2012) series, published by Image Comics. The next phase of Scioli's career was pivotal in terms of the evolution of his work as a creator, writer and artist. During this period he produced American Barbarian as well as Satan's Soldier and Princess, and he co-wrote (with John Barber) and drew the critically acclaimed Transformers vs. G.I. JOE maxi-series (2014–2016), which elevated his career and demonstrated a kaleidoscopic tapestry of pop culture, comics and animation influences. He followed this with a five issue Go-Bots mini-series (2018), then produced the inventive and original 'Super Powers' (2017) back-up feature for DC Comics' Young Animal imprint and created Fantastic Four: Grand Design (2019), which he wrote, drew, lettered and coloured. This interview also includes a conversation with Scioli from 2009 which provides insights regarding his early career and influences.
