- Abstract: The tool-center-error will produce a cylinder or cone residual part at the center of the workpiece in single-point diamond turning, which greatly affect the surface quality and optical performance it carries. In order to achieve rapid and accurate positioning of the tool and improve the machined surface quality, this paper conducted a series of theoretical and experimental studies to analyze the relation between the tool-below-center (TBC) error and the cutting force, and developed an on-line identification method for tool-center-error, which can greatly improve the identification accuracy and efficiency. Firstly, according to the slope obtained by fitting the cutting force in the stable cutting stage, the relationship between the slope and the TBC error was established. Then, a geometric model was established to calculate the time which the tool feeds from workpiece center to exit cutting. Furthermore, the method analyzes the cutting force to obtain the slope and time, from which the tool-center-error is calculated. Finally, the identified error was verified by experiment. The measured and identified value was found well matching, which demonstrates that the proposed method is accurate and effective. This method may promote the automation of ultra-precision machining.
