- Abstract: Turning is an essential process in any manufacturing process. Turning of steel is inevitable as the steel is found application in several industries. Optimal turning of steel will increase the productivity and economics of the production sector. Turning of steel is done using a single point cutting tool and the tool geometry plays an important role in the optimization process. Tool geometry highly influences on the turning process of AISI 1040 steel. This work demonstrates the influence of tool geometry. Minimization of the surface roughness is considered in this work. In this work the surface roughness is measured using surface roughness tester. The nose radius is found to be the dominant factor in the minimization of the surface roughness when compared to other parameters considered in this work. Regression model is developed.
