- Abstract: A rapid prototype is a process that currently has a wide application in production (compared with traditional manufacturing), where the layers of materials are deposited progressively until a finished product is obtained. Additive manufacturing and 3D printing are the other known names of this technology. Fused deposition modelling (FDM) is a noticeable additive manufacturing technique used in various engineering activities. The selection of process variables plays an important role to measure the quality of FDM processed components. In this article, the knowledge summarization of process parameters for FDM in 3D printing, and various kinds of PLA material properties testing. This technology is constantly optimized and accepted by increasing numbers of research institutes, companies, and consumers as cost, functionality, product quality, and production time. The trends in this area for future FDM research are outlined.
