- Abstract: Properties of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) degrade because of damage accumulation during cyclic loading. In this paper, damage accumulation of CFRP subjected to transverse tensile fatigue loading is presented. Carbon fiber in this study is represented using simple square lattice configuration. Representative volume element is used for finite element (FE) simulation of CFRP. Only matrix damage is considered. A volume weighted stress distribution in the matrix is used to develop an Ensemble Damage Accumulation model. The damage transfer function and the stress distribution, obtained from FE simulation, is used to gauge the damage accumulation in the composite. Unlike empirical models, this model is capable of predicting the effect of volume fraction, fiber arrangement and other microstructure attributes on the fatigue damage accumulation.
