- Abstract : Proton translocation across biological membranes is an essential mechanism for important cellular tasks such as ATP production or nutrient uptake. Proteoliposomes containing pH‐sensitive fluorescent dyes are an important tool to investigate these processes. The cover illustrates a lipid vesicle with an embedded proton translocating F1 FO ATP synthase. The pH‐sensitive dye is anchored to the membrane by bifunctional DNA duplexes to ensure efficient incorporation. The DNA backbone on the outside can be cut enzymatically to yield proteoliposomes with the pH sensor selectively on the inside.
