- Abstract: MgMn2 O4 (MMO) nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method using different chelators (citric acid/sucrose) and solvents (water/ethanol). When sucrose/water was used as chelator/solvent, pure MMO samples with particle size of 30–60 nm were obtained. The cationic distribution of MMO nanoparticles was studied by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results indicated that all samples were of mixed spinel structure, and Mg and Mn ions occupied both tetrahedral and octahedral sites. The material prepared by using citric acid/ethanol, with the smallest particle size (20–30 nm), exhibited lower inversion degree. The electrochemical performance of MMO nanoparticles were characterized. The sample prepared by using citric acid/ethanol has the highest charge-discharge capacity, which was 396.1/693.5 mA h/g for the first charge-discharge capacity, and the discharge capacity remained 483.6 mA h/g after 100 cycles. The relationship between structure and performance of the materials was also discussed. Highlights: MgMn2 O4 nanoparticles was firstly synthesized by sol-gel method using sucrose as chelator. Effects of different solvents/chelators on the structure and performance of MgMn2 O4 were studied. The electronic structure of MgMn2 O4 was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. MgMn2 O4 materials have good cyclic stability as anode material for Li-ion batteries. The relationship between structure and properties of MgMn2 O4 materials was discussed.
