Abstract

Abstract: In many medical incidents, erroneous administration of insulin dosage (either very less or too high and in some cases at wrong times) can upshot in serious hypo or hyper glycemia conditions which causes diabetic ketoacidosis. This article readdresses this life-threatening issue by regulating the flow rate of exogenous insulin by using a robust control methodology. Insulin has to be introduced exogenously into the body to bring glucose levels to normal level in T1DM (Type-1 Diabetes Mellitus) patients. Present work proposes a novel method using Nonlinear Transformation (NT) form of sliding mode control to regulate the blood glucose levels in T1DM patients in the presence and absence of food intake (meal disturbance). Three sequential major steps are involved in this method: sensing of present blood glucose concentration, feeding the information to insulin pump through proposed controller and pumping out specified insulin doses based on the control signal. The dynamic behaviour between glucose and insulin levels inside the body is studied through Bergman's minimal model (BMM). The supremacy of the NT based sliding mode control (SMC), lies in its adaptability to operate in the glucose-insulin model under hyperglycemic and hypoglycemic conditions. Matlab simulation results are validated for the good performance and effectiveness of the SMC controller. The proposed control method will definite benefit diabetic patients in intensive care units by keeping a track of blood glucose regulation at regular intervals.
