- Highlights: Phase field model in elasto-plastic material was implemented via Abaqus UEL and UMAT subroutines. Plastic history field was proposed to achieve the aim of tension-compression split. Numerical examples for verification were simulated under monotonic and cyclic loadings. Abstract: Fracture phase-field models have been integrated with plasticity to describe crack propagation in elasto-plastic materials in numerous studies. However, even with the elastic energy decomposition method, the phase-field evolution may produce unrealistic crack patterns for elasto-plastic materials under compressive stresses. In this study, we propose a plastic history field using the staggered algorithm scheme to perform the energy decomposition. Then, several numerical examples are simulated from a single element to the widely used specimen configurations. The results indicate that our model, compared with the conventional phase-field model, can better prevent crack growth for elasto-plastic materials under compressive stress states and can simulate crack patterns that are more consistent with experiments.
