- Abstract: The potential use of carbonaceous sugarcane bagasse as carrier media of Bacillus subtilis in amending microstructure and corrosion inhibition of reinforced concrete is explored in this study. The chlorides migration inside the concrete, electrochemical performance of embedded steel along with healing and densification in microstructure were assessed. There was a 53.78% reduction in the depth of migrated chlorides due to the densification of concrete matrix by spherical to rhombohedral calcite precipitation in voids. Besides, bio-immobilized formulation offered 97.5% corrosion inhibition efficiency compared to the control samples when exposed to 5% NaCl-based electrolyte for 12.5 months. Therefore, the integrated bacterial spores and pyrolytic bagasse biochar could be employed in concrete to improve the microstructure, corrosion inhibition, and to add environmental benefits.
