- Highlights: WF diameter has no direct effect on the dynamic compressive strength of WF/Zr-MG. WF/Zr-MG exhibits splitting failure and compound failure during dynamic compression. Failure mode of WF/Zr-MG is affected by the volume fraction of WF and strain rate. The initiation and propagation of cracks are not impeded by the fiber/matrix interface. Abstract: Tungsten fiber/Zr-based bulk metallic glass matrix composite (WF/Zr-MG) is a potential penetrator material. In the present paper, the effect of tungsten fiber (WF) diameter on the dynamic compression properties of WF/Zr-MG rod is studied. Dynamic compression tests of WF/Zr-MG reinforced by ∅0.3 mm, ∅0.5 mm, ∅0.7 mm and ∅1.0 mm WFs are conducted. The test results show that under the dynamic compression, cracks initiate in the WFs and the fiber/matrix interface on the end face of the specimen, and the cracks propagate only within the WFs. Because the crack propagation is not affected by the interfaces between fiber and matrix during dynamic compression, so the WF diameter has no direct effect on the dynamic compressive strength, fracture strain and fracture mode of WF/Zr-MG. On the contrary, the volume fraction of WF and strain rate have great effect on the fracture mode of WF/Zr-MG. Under different volume fraction and strain rate, WF/Zr-MG exhibits two fracture modes, splitting fracture and compound fracture of splitting and shear fracture.
