- Abstract: Concrete bridges with box sections can be analysed and designed by a fine discretization based on shells. For a given shell region, it has 24 degrees of internal force freedom. Under certain loads, e.g. dead load, the 24 internal forces are fixed. However, under live load, the 24 internal forces are variable due to the movement of vehicles. To appproximate the most unfavourable case, the concept of the "corresponding force matrix" is proposed in this paper. The matrix has 48 rows corresponding to all the possible unfavourable cases of a shell region under live load and 24 columns corresponding to all the degrees of internal force freedom. For each row, only one single degree of internal force reaches its extremum (maximum or minimum) while the others take the corresponding values according to the same live load distribution. The principle also applies to loads combination that determines the required most unfavourable reinforcement of shells. At last, a two-span continuous box-section reinforced concrete bridge was taken to illustrate the application of the proposed matrix in the process of reinforcement design.
