- Abstract: Hydrogels are among the well-liked biomaterials due to their biocompatibility and non-toxic properties which can be used in various applications in the field of engineering and medicine. Hydrogels are hydrophilic components that have the capability to absorb water or biological fluid. Hydrogels can be synthesised by polymer crosslinking. The main objective of this review is to gather information about the various applications of hydrogel. In this review, the properties and applications of various hydrogels such as acrylic acid, acrylamide, and preparation method of these hydrogels using N, N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA-crosslinker), ammonium persulfate (APS-initiator), tetramethylethylenediamine (TEMEDA-catalyst), and Fe +3 (ionic cross linker) are explored and discussed. Additionally, future perspective of such materials in intranasal applications are also considered in this review. Highlights: Hydrogels are gaining popularity due to their water-absorbing capacity. Mechanical properties of the hydrogel can be controlled. Acrylic acid/acrylamide hydrogels showed promising properties for future applications in biomedical field.
