- Abstract: To reach international goals on climate protection, greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) of the building sector must be reduced significantly. Besides further insulation, renewable heat must be used, which require storage to utilise fluctuating heat generation. This storage can be gained by integrating thermal activations into solid external walls and thus converting them into multifunctional building parts (MBP). Using MBP as part of a heating system of a single-family dwelling in a temperate climate to store solar heat reduces the demand for net energy by 25% and increases thermal comfort. These energy savings can be found during the whole heating period and are based on the more efficient and extensive utilisation of solar radiation. The heat generated is mainly stored in the MBPs. In addition, the use of external building components also leads to a reduction of the residual heat demand due to the elimination of transmission losses. Those account for about 20–25% of the savings found. In conclusion, the concept is compared to other building concepts and shows that the MFB lead to similar results as using a buffer storage of 3 m³ and is beneficial compared to the passive house concept.
