- Abstract: In this work, biomass from coffee waste grounds was activated through hydrothermal treatment at 200 °C, followed by carbonization at 800 °C to produce porous carbon electrode. The material prepared was characterized using various instruments to establish capacitive deionization (CDI) properties: XRD, Raman spectroscopy, FTIR, BET, TEM, ZetaSizer, CV, EIS and GCD. The material obtained was porous (0.2607 cm 3 g −1 ) with surface area (323 m 2 g −1 ) and exhibited charge and discharge behavior with specific capacitance of 108 F g −1 . Characterization techniques confirmed that this renewable material can be used in CDI desalination, which can support sustainability of this technology.
