- Abstract: The present study concerns test uncertainty analysis of outdoor free-running model tests for assessing the maneuverability. The Office of Naval Research Tumblehome surface combatant model with a damaged compartment on the bow was used for outdoor free-running model tests. The random and systematic standard uncertainty was assessed from repeated maneuvering tests and comparison with indoor free-running model tests, respectively. The random standard uncertainty of the maneuverability parameters was larger in the damaged condition than the intact condition. The systematic standard uncertainty was divided into the calculated uncertainty from data as in a calibration process and estimated uncertainty from the best available information. The calibration systematic standard uncertainty has used the values of free-running model tests in the calm water of the wave basin, and the measurement error of the measurement system was considered. Highlights: Outdoor free-running model tests of the ONR Tumblehome hull were conducted to assess the maneuverability of damaged ships. The maneuvering parameters were calculated and the associated uncertainty was analyzed.
