Abstract

Abstract: Restoring the degraded Atlantic Forest is one of the biggest conservation challenges in Brazil. In a biome with high human presence, understanding the potential for restoration approaches, such as agroforestry, to provide benefits to smallholder farmers and biodiversity is essential in developing equitable restoration strategies. Smallholder or family farmers are essential to national food security, producing most fruit and vegetables consumed in Brazil. Their farms can also provide ecological stepping stones for biodiversity. To better understand their role in Atlantic Forest restoration, this study explores the use of agroforestry by smallholder farmers from the Movimento Sem Terra (MST), the Rural Landless Workers' Movement, in Pontal do Paranapanema. We use quantitative and qualitative data to assess farmer perceptions of the measures which support agroforestry farming, barriers to implementation and its impact on indicators of wellbeing. We find agroforestry farmers report significant benefits in 8 of 18 tested indicators. Attitudes to agroforestry are varied, but common themes emerge including the high value of tree cover for shade and cooling effects, and the difficulties in selling agroforestry products. Our results show lack of policy support and initial investment needs are the biggest constraints to agroforestry, but opportunity cost is not considered a large barrier. Tailored policies and financial measures are needed to integrate thousands of smallholder farmers into the Atlantic Forest restoration agenda, helping to reach biome restoration targets while supporting rural livelihoods and national food security. Further research is required into links between additional socio‐economic and biogeographical variables and agroforestry uptake in the region. Em um bioma com alta presença humana, é imprescindível compreender o potencial de diferentes sistemas de restauração florestal, como os sistemas agroflorestais (SAF). Os SAF oferecem a possibilidade de beneficiar os agricultores familiares e à biodiversidade e é essencial aumentar sua presença nas estratégias de restauração. Os pequenos produtores ou agricultores familiares são vitais para segurança alimentar, produzindo a maioria das frutas e hortaliças consumidas no Brasil. Suas terras também podem funcionar como trampolins ecológicos para a biodiversidade. Para entender melhor seu papel na restauração da Mata Atlântica, este estudo explora o uso de sistemas agroflorestais (SAF) por agricultores familiares do Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST), no Pontal do Paranapanema. Usamos dados quantitativos e qualitativos para analisar as percepções dos agricultores sobre as medidas que apoiam a agricultura agroflorestal, as barreiras que impedem seu uso e o impacto das SAF em indicadores de bem‐estar. Encontramos que a agricultura com SAF cria benefícios significativos em 8 dos 18 indicadores testados. As atitudes em relação à agricultura com SAF são variadas, mas surgem temas comuns, incluindo o alto valor da cobertura de árvores permitindo trabalhar com sombra, e as dificuldades na venda de produtos agroflorestais. Nossos resultados mostram que a falta de apoio político e as necessidades de investimento inicial são as maiores barreiras para agricultura com SAF, mas o custo de oportunidade não é considerado uma grande barreira. Políticas personalizadas e medidas financeiras são necessárias para integrar os milhares de pequenos agricultores da Mata Atlântica na agenda de restauração ecológica, ajudando a cumprir com metas de restauração do bioma ao mesmo tempo em que apoia a subsistência rural e a segurança alimentar nacional. Mais pesquisas são necessárias para entender melhor as ligações entre variáveis socioeconômicas e biogeográficas e a adoção de sistemas agroflorestais na região.
