Abstract

Abstract : Accounts are provided of the examination of two adjacent crannogs in the Clyde at Erskine and Old Kilpatrick. The first is based on the planning of the surface remains, a more detailed examination of some of the timbers and an assessment of the limited finds recovered; the second on collating the scattered antiquarian records of an 'excavation' undertaken in 1906 and a detailed examination of the surviving finds. The two sites are contextualised within current understanding of the chronology, character and function of estuarine crannogs in the western lowlands of Scotland
