- Abstract: Laser deposition is a growing additive manufacturing process for its applications in repair and functional graded materials. This study investigates the influence of powder deposition for Ti-6Al-4V using synchronized X-ray and thermal infrared imaging. Melt pool geometry and their theoretical estimates as well as thermal histories are compared between a clad without and with powder deposition. The results show how powder deposition causes fluctuations in geometry and thermal histories. Fundamental understanding of the influence of powder deposition into a melt pool can lead to better prediction of melt pool geometry, thermal history, and better controlled processing.
