Abstract

Abstract: It has been estimated that up to 40% of blood transfusions are given to surgical patients. Despite transfusion being safer than it ever has been, it still poses significant risk. These can be heightened in the perioperative period when identifying complications can also be more challenging. This article outlines the risks associated with perioperative transfusions and discusses the current recommendations for transfusion and use of alternatives to blood transfusion.
