Abstract

Abstract : Cis -1, 2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene ( cis -dppen) reacts with SnX4 (X = Br, I) in dichloromethane in aerobic conditions yielding 1:1 adducts [SnX4 ( cis -dppenO2 )] [X = Br (1 ), I (2 )], containing the phosphine in oxidized form. The complexes have been characterized by elemental analyses and FT-IR spectroscopy. The structure of complex 2 has been determined crystallographically. The complex crystallizes in the space group, P c with a = 9.4939(7) Å, b = 18.3589(9) Å, c = 18.1239(13) Å, β = 98.840(6)°. The oxidized phosphine acts as a cheland enforcing a distorted octahedral geometry. The 31 P NMR spectra of the CD2 Cl2 solution containing a mixture of cis -dppen and SnX4 (X = Br, I) indicate the initial formation of phosphine coordinated product before the formation of ultimate phosphine oxide coordinated product.
