- Abstract : (Abstracted from Hum Reprod 2021;36:3095–3107) Declining oocyte fertilization capacity and developmental potential, involving deficits in both nucleus and cytoplasm contributing to aberrant meiosis, is the major contributor to declining fertility and increased rate of congenital birth defects in women older than the age of 35 years. Oocyte aging is directly affected by a variety of factors, both environmental and intrinsic; however, the precise mechanism remains unclear.
