- Highlights: The principle of micro-LED as a photodetector is demonstrated. The optoelectronic characteristics and core parameters of the micro-LED-based detector are systematically studied and presented. Micro-LED-based detectors provide new ideas for bidirectional high-speed optical communication and self-powered devices. A computational temporal ghost imaging algorithm is successfully used to alleviate the bandwidth shortage of micro-LED detectors. Abstract: This work proposes a wireless visible light communication (VLC) system based on computational temporal ghost imaging (CTGI) technique and a micro-LED-based detector. The optoelectronic characteristics of the micro-LED-based detector were systematically studied. Under the bias voltage of 0 and −5 V, the responsivities of 0.227 and 0.233 A/W, the specific detectivities of 1.20 × 10 13 and 4.39 × 10 11 cmHz 1/2 W −1, and the bandwidth of 16.33 and 22.62 MHz were achieved for the micro-LED-based detector, respectively. Furthermore, the micro-LED was tested as a receiver in the CTGI-based VLC system, which achieved error-free transmission under the condition of 4 GHz transmitting frequency and 1.5 m free space distance, demonstrating the potential of micro-LED for bidirectional communication. This research provides a new VLC technique based on CTGI, which can effectively alleviate the problem of the limited bandwidth of micro-LED-based detectors, and provide an important reference for the application of micro-LED to VLC.
