- Abstract: Poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) is a biodegradable thermoplastic that has shown promising properties to replace single-use plastics for a range of applications. In addition to its biodegradability, PHBV has competitive mechanical properties, making it appealing for packaging and consumer goods applications. However, it is substantially more expensive than conventional plastics, and its brittleness hinders it from extensive applications. In this work, we have utilized a by-product from bast hemp fiber processing called hemp powder residue (HP) as a functional additive together with polybutylene adipate-co-terephthalate (PBAT) to optimize the properties of PHBV while also improving the cost structure. The developed biocomposite containing more than 50% of HP and PBAT additive attain similar heat deflection temperature, impact strength, tensile properties to neat PHBV, making it cost and performance-competitive to other conventional plastics. Overall, the sustainable and compostable biocomposites put forward here are an appealing candidate for rigid packaging, containers, and other commodity applications.
