- Abstract: Based on a bench-scale opposed multi-burner entrained-flow gasifier, the spectral characteristics and two-dimensional OH∗ distribution of impinging diesel flames were investigated. The influence of measurement method on the relationship between radical emission intensity and flame properties was evaluated. CH∗ intensity based on peak height is more sensitive to the change of the O/C equivalence ratio than that according to peak area, while it is the opposite for Na∗. OH∗ intensity shows a non-monotonic change with the increasing O/C equivalence ratio. The intensity changes of CH∗ and K∗ were significantly limited by background emissions. Na∗ can be considered as a great indicator of flame properties. In addition, two-dimensional OH∗ distribution and line-of-sight images show that in the innermost side of impinging center, the flame gradually varies from locally fuel-rich to stoichiometric and then to fuel-lean, while in the outermost side it is always fuel-lean. Additional emission peaks are formed at the burner exit due to the intense reaction. Graphical abstract: Image 1 Highlights: Spectral characteristics of impinging flame in gasifier were studied. Sensitivities for flame diagnosis of OH∗, CH∗, Na∗ and K∗ were evaluated. Two-dimensional OH∗ distribution in gasifier was obtained. The additional emission peaks were observed at the burner exit. Combustion state changes in impinging zone were determined.
