- Abstract:
- Abstract: In Washington State, a grassroots movement called Momentia promotes connection, sense of purpose and enjoyment of the arts through innovative dementia-friendly programs. From improv workshops at the theater to watercolor painting classes in the park, programs are rooted in the maintained strengths of persons with dementia. Research has explored the personal, relational and societal benefits of individual programs, in particular those devoted to creative engagement. Meanwhile, demand to spread this successful approach has resulted in a model, Momentia in My Neighborhood. Now replicated in three regions across the state, this model positions people with dementia and their care partners as leaders in program development, with the support of partner organizations. This session will provide an overview of Momentia's guiding principles, review prior research into program efficacy, and describe the Momentia in My Neighborhood model and its application in statewide program dissemination.
