- Abstract: Persons with dementia are about two times more likely to be hospitalized than their peers who are cognitively healthy. They are frequently discharged to skilled nursing facilities to receive short-term, post-acute, rehabilitative care. Using retrospective Minimum Data Set assessment and Medicare claims data (cohort 2012–2013), this study examined the influence of dementia upon the immediate post-hospitalization outcomes of 23, 662 persons (mean age=84, age range 65–106) admitted to skilled nursing facilities in Massachusetts. A multiple linear regression model for the total ADL score (mean= 53.89, SD=15.03) indicated that, upon admission to the facility, ADL function was significantly associated with the diagnosis of dementia (B=2.3, p<0.0001), after controlling for age (p=0.0042), being white (p=0.0039), widowed status (p<0.0001), hearing loss (p=0.0027), vision loss (p<0.0001), severity of cognitive impairment (p<0.0001) and delirium (p=0.0161). Results underscore the need to create rehabilitative approaches specialized to the complex needs of the person with dementia, beginning at admission
