Abstract

Abstract: Older adults who are cognitively and physically impaired are high-risk for mortality. This analysis used data from 1, 291 participants of the Mexican Health and Aging Study aged >60 who were cognitively and physically impaired in 2003 to investigate if the risk for mortality through 2015 varied according to whether the cognitive or physical limitations occurred first. Cox models revealed that participants who were physically impaired and cognitively intact in 2001 had 1.42 (95% CI=1.09–1.86) times higher mortality risk compared to participants who were physically intact and cognitively impaired. The increased risk was not statistically significant after controlling for demographic (age, gender, education) (HR=1.25, 95% CI=0.95–1.64) and health (diabetes, hypertension, heart attack, arthritis, falls) characteristics (HR=1.22, 95% CI=0.93–1.62). This analysis provides evidence that the order of cognitive and physical impairments, as well as the differences in demographic and health characteristics, contribute to mortality for older Mexican adults.
