Abstract

Abstract: Control beliefs are related to health outcomes, especially in persons with chronic illnesses. We examined whether HbA1c, an indicator of glucose regulation, and control beliefs were predictive of survival for individuals diagnosed with diabetes, and whether control beliefs moderated the effects of HbA1c. The sample consisted of 1, 901 individuals with Type I or II diabetes (Mage=69.8 years, SD=9; 52.6% female) from the Health and Retirement Study diabetes survey in 2003. HRS 2014 tracker data provided vital status from 2003 to 2014 (47.3% were deceased). Adjusted Cox models showed that higher levels of HbA1c increased mortality risk by 8%, while higher control beliefs reduced mortality risk by 34%. The significant interaction term revealed that the individuals with low control beliefs and high HbA1c had two times higher risk of mortality than those with high control beliefs and low HbA1c. Our findings suggest future interventions with diabetic patients should address control beliefs.
