- Abstract: Chronic insufficient sleep (<6hours/night) increases in the adult population, and additional age-related deterioration of sleep quality raises concerns about sleep health among older adults. Sleep health needs to be understood by multiple sleep characteristics within individuals (e.g., sufficient sleep duration, satisfaction with sleep, daytime alertness, consistent sleep timing, and sleep efficiency). However, few studies have considered multidimensional sleep health and its potential role in the associations between aging and functional limitations. This symposium showcases contemporary endeavors towards understanding how sleep health (or lack thereof) contributes to the mechanisms leading to diverse forms of functional limitations in community-dwelling older adults. Paper 1 tests the association between poor sleep health (an index based on 5-dimensions of self-reported sleep) and impairment in independent daily living and reports sex differences. Paper 2 examines the association of arthritis with sleep health (an index based on 5-dimensions of both self-reported and actigraphic sleep) in older men, and tests whether sleep health mediates the associations of arthritis with systemic inflammation. Paper 3 uses Japanese and Singaporean samples of older adults to examine the longitudinal associations of sleep health (binary indicator based on 3-dimensions of self-reported sleep) with pain-related outcomes, and compares cross-cultural differences. Paper 4 examines theAbstract: Chronic insufficient sleep (<6hours/night) increases in the adult population, and additional age-related deterioration of sleep quality raises concerns about sleep health among older adults. Paper 4 examines the links between sleep health (each of 3-dimensions of actigraphic sleep) and objectively-measured physical performance among older men. At the end of these presentations, Dr. Buxton will discuss their theoretical and methodological contributions, and consider challenges and opportunities for future research examining the interplay between sleep and health in later life. … (more)
