Abstract

Abstract: We explore how intensive caregiving is associated with economic outcomes across the lifecycle using the cross-sectional 2013 RAND Survey of Military and Veteran Caregivers (n=3, 775). We estimate average marginal effects of the association between intensive caregiving (≥20 hours/week) and six economic outcomes: schooling, labor force participation, unpaid time off work, reducing work hours, quitting a job, and early retirement. Intensive caregivers are 12% points (95% CI: -19 to -5%) less likely to be employed than non-caregivers. Intensive caregivers are 3% points (CI: 0.05 to 5%) more likely to cut back schooling, 6% points (CI: 2 to 10%) more likely to take unpaid time off of work, 4% points (CI: 1 to 9%) more likely to cut back work hours, 12% points (CI: 8 to 15%) more likely to quit a job, and 5% points (CI: 2 to 7%) more likely retire early due to caregiving responsibilities relative to non-intensive caregivers.
