Abstract

Abstract: Purpose: To examine the challenges family caregivers are confronted with following a recommendation for their relative to cease driving. Methods: The sample consisted of 63 caregivers, ages 38 to 93 years old (M = 61.40, SD = 11.20; 69.8% female; 90.5% Caucasian), who provided assistance to an adult recommended to cease driving following an evaluation at a Driving Assessment Clinic (DAC) for adults with medical conditions. Participants were contacted at least 2 months post-evaluation in order to have had time to experience potential caregiver challenges following the recommendation. Caregivers completed a semi-structured needs assessment survey via telephone. For the current study, qualitative responses regarding the unique challenges caregivers found most distressing following their relative's driving evaluation were coded into themes separately by two researchers, with a third researcher resolving any discrepancy. Results: 70% of participants reported 1 or more distressing challenges related to caregiving. Fourteen unique themes emerged with the top 5 being: (1) caregiver emotional distress, (2) time constraints, (3) difficulty managing care-recipient emotions and behaviors (e.g., arguments around continuing to drive or transportation alternatives), and (4) problems with coordinating and distributing caregiving tasks. Providing assistance with instrumental activities of daily living (IADLS) and family relationship strain both tied as the fifth theme. Conclusions: Caregivers experience a variety of challenges following a relative's recommendation to cease driving. The findings will be discussed in terms of enhancing provider communication about such challenges, available resources, and ongoing support programs to minimize family stress.
