- Abstract: The purpose of this 4-year longitudinal study was to identify the effects of consumption of various food groups on incidence of decline of activities of daily living (ADL) in community-dwelling older women in Japan. The study included 1, 111 women aged 75–85 years without ADL disability at the baseline examination, who were available for follow-up 4 years later. The association between the self-reported frequency of consumption of food groups (seafood, meat, egg, milk, soy products, colored vegetables, seaweeds, potatoes, fruits, fats and oils) at baseline and the incidence rate of ADL decline during the follow-up period was examined using logistic regression analyses, incorporating baseline age, body weight, and years of education as covariates. The incidence rate of ADL decline was 7.6%. The odds ratio (OR) of the incidence of ADL decline for those who consumed soy products twice per week or less relative to those who consumed them almost every day was 2.4 (95% CI = 1.4–4.1). The OR for those who consumed colored vegetables twice per week or less relative to those who consumed them almost every day was 2.7 (95% CI = 1.3–5.6). The OR for those who consumed fats and oils twice per week or less relative to those who consumed them almost every day was 2.1 (95% CI = 1.2–3.4). These results suggest that daily consumption of soy products, colored vegetables, and fats and oils may help prevent ADL decline in community-dwelling older women in Japan.
